Job Description: Chartered Senior (Structural) Engineer

Responsibilities
  • Promote and embody the company vision and deliver personal and company goals.
  • Maintain a high degree of professionalism and diligence.

  • Assist other staff wherever possible.
  • Readily engage with Engineers outside of their area of specialisation.
  • Carry out tasks assigned in a timely manner.
  • Ask questions, and assist other staff wherever possible.
  • Participate in development of the company through feedback - both raising concerns as well as making suggestions for improvement where appropriate.
  • Conduct research, review and complete Technical Notes.
  • Adhere to health and safety regulations at all times.
  • Be on the lookout for relevant courses and other training initiatives and maintain levels of CPD.
  • Analyse data and interpret results.
  • Write reports, read and sign off reports of technical staff.
  • Develop relationships with existing collaborators and seek out relationships with potential collaborators
  • Establish professional relationships with staff.
  • Engage in social activities.
  • Undertake the role of assigned mentor alongside a more structured, agreed training plan for junior staff.
  • Manage projects including, but not limited to:
  • Lead meetings and workshops.
  • Accompany other engineers to meetings and sites.
  • Understand project requirements and complete all duties assigned by the Director.
  • Deliver economic schemes that fulfil the brief.
  • Coordinate project resourcing.
  • Review project deliverables (drawing, specifications, reports, drawings etc).
  • Undertake comparisons of tender returns and report findings back to clients.
  • Review third party designs and drawings.
  • Provide schemes compliant with temporary works requirements. Where appropriate, design these temporary works.
  • Provide alternative solutions and, where appropriate within the fee agreement, value engineering.
  • Assist in maintaining and developing the Business Plan. For example:
  • Financial: budgets, billing targets, charge out rates
  • Marketing: website, social media, networking
  • Processes: policies, templates, training, technical library
  • Social: internal and external events, mentoring
Requirements:
  • A minimum of 10 years senior engineer (and therefore design, construction and project management) experience.
  • Chartered status in a relevant engineering institution.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Excellent written, drawn and verbal communication skills.
  • Superb time management and professionalism.
  • A growth mindset.
  • Ability and willingness to accept, and to progress from, constructive criticism.
  • Excellent team working and leadership skills.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
Key Performance Indicators:
  • Filling in timesheets weekly
  • Load path sketch / Mark up at the start of each calculation section
  • Loading, Forces & Deflection diagram for all beams & frames
  • Following the calculation, drawing, filing & report writing templates and guidance
  • Monthly production and review of Technical Notes.
  • Increasing / improving profitability throughout the employment with a target of £150 per hour by the end of year 1.
  • Delivery of agreed 90 day goals.
  • Any other goals or targets to be agreed with the Director.
